NaNoWriMo
NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month is a challenge where you commit to writing a story of 50,000 words over a period of 30 days. There's nothing to "win" really, other than the pride of getting it done. Which I did on my first attempt in 2018 and again in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Wenn Paul träumt (2021)
Wenn Paul träumt, kommen Wesen aus einer Parallelwelt in unsere Realität. Was wollen sie hier und wie kann er sie aufhalten? Mit Hilfe seiner Nachbarin Sophia, die ihm als einzige glaubt, macht sich Paul daran, genau das herauszufinden. Er lernt viel über Schlaf und Träume und was wir darüber alles noch nicht wissen, doch das reicht nicht aus, um sie zu stoppen. Bis er schließlich einen unerwarteten Verbündeten findet.
Er wachte davon auf, dass etwas auf ihm saß. Es hatte in etwa die Größe einer Katze, aber deutlich mehr Beine und Gewicht. Und während er noch versuchte, das Wesen im Halbdunkel und Halbschlaf näher zu identifizieren, drang das Getrippel auf dem Parkettboden in sein Bewusstsein. Hier waren noch mehr davon!

Glitch (2020)
Having a superpower sounds cool. Jason has one, but he doesn’t want it. Turns out, a superpower that you can’t control isn’t so cool. And while Jason tries to get his unwanted power under control, word gets out, attracting shady figures.
And then, when he was expecting to hit the ground, which, as he noticed, was covered in fir needles, it suddenly felt like he was instead falling into cling wrap. His vision stretched and blurred, as you would expect when you try to see through transparent wrap. A split- second later, the foil tore, his right foot finally came forward, followed by his left foot, which was suddenly free again, and a few stumbling steps later, he had regained his balance, barely avoiding the impact on the tarmac.
As he stood there, bent forward, his hands on his hips, trying to catch his breath, it dawned on him that something was wrong. Tarmac?

Salastra (2019)
Vier Studenten kommen zufällig einer Waffenschmiede auf die Spur. Nicht in einem topgeheimen Labor, sondern in einem verschlafenen italienischen Universitätsstädtchen werden unter dem Vorwand der Grundlagenforschung völlig neuartige und außergewöhnliche Waffen entwickelt. Und niemand will etwas davon wissen. Doch dann bekommen sie vollkommen unerwartete Hilfe.
Mit einem lauten Klatschen landete ein Stapel Papier zwischen uns auf dem Mensa-Tisch. Wir, das waren Julia, Sarah, und ich, sahen zu Marco auf, der ihn geworfen hatte.
"Das," erklärte er, etwas zu laut und mit kaum überhörbarem Stolz in der Stimme, "ist die Arbeit, nach der ich die ganze Zeit gesucht habe." Er setzte sich schnell zu uns, da ihm selbst aufgefallen war, dass er die Aufmerksamkeit der Umsitzenden auf sich gezogen hatte. Wir warteten geduldig, bis er sich gesetzt, seine Jacke ausgezogen und sich verschwörerisch auf den Tisch gelehnt hatte. Wir rückten enger zusammen.

New Granville (2018)
In a not-too-distant future, the coastal city of New Granville is still recovering from the aftermath of having experienced the impact of climate change first-hand. At the same time, the city has to provide shelter for an ever-increasing number of refugees from regions that have been less fortunate.
Amidst these challenges, human rights activist Urzula McGuinn and Mayor Mueller struggle trying to find the right balance between humanitarian help and the city's own interests.
The situation takes a dramatic turn for the worse when they unexpectedly have to accept the entire population of a doomed island into the city. Unbeknownst to them, the new arrivals include a radicalised religious group whose goal is nothing less than helping nature wipe out humanity. Despite best intentions, chaos erupts when two crimes trigger outbreaks of violence, threatening to engulf and ultimately destroy the city.
"Mrs. McGuinn! A good morning to you. Always a pleasure to see you!" And here it came, the reason why she dreaded being in this room so much, despite the marvellous view.
"Mayor Mueller. I wish I could say the same."
